The Mystery Behind Andrew Garfield and Batkid’s Canceled Oscar Appearance

The Academy Awards decided to go with a theme this year – heroes. They didn’t go overboard but did have a few moments where they celebrating heroes, both real and fictional. At one point, Captain America: The Winter Soldier star Chris Evans introduced a montage of film clips pertaining to the theme, but that’s not what was originally intended according to new reports. Batkid, the adorable boy who San Francisco gave a hero’s adventure to back in November, was supposed to make a surprise appearance with none other than The Amazing Spider-Man’s Andrew Garfield. So why didn’t it happen?

Batkid’s mom, Natalie Scott, spoke with the International Business Times about the big trip to Hollywood, which was made at “fairly short notice.” Batkid went as far to don a little tuxedo and did a rehearsal at the Dolby Theater on Saturday.

“I don’t know if they ran out of time, of if there was something about the segment they didn’t like,” Scott told them. “It got pulled so quickly that we didn’t have a lot of insight into what was going on.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Sources say Miles rehearsed a segment with Garfield during during a Saturday run-through, but it was then decided that the segment wasn’t coming together as originally envisioned it and it was cut from the show.” And an Academy spokesperson told them, ”Basically, because of the fluid nature of live TV production, ultimately the segment didn’t work.”

But other, more gossipy sources are saying Garfield played a role in the cutting of the segment which, according to Mashable, had a big Gotham City set with Batkid’s name in lights. The Daily Dot writes about a Page Six report that claimed, “Garfield refused to go by the script. He came up with his own lines. The producers felt that Garfield’s [rewrites] were not appropriate. Garfield had a tantrum. He stormed off.”

Considering what I’ve seen of Garfield in the press, I’m leaning towards disbelief here, though he was set to appear and Evans reportedly filled in for him. It sounds more like a behind-the-scenes production problem considering Evans could have literally filled in for Garfield if it was really him causing the issues.

“It is kind of a disappointment, but things happen,” Scott told IBT. “I know that’s how TV goes and how Hollywood is. We’re just not used to that; we’re from a really small town.” To make up for it, the Academy paid for Batkid and his family to take a trip to Disneyland. E! News reports Garfield spent time with them there.

Another Marvel movie, another selection of eerily realistic action figures from Hot Toys, this time with everyone’s favorite product of the Cold War, Black Widow. She even comes with lit-up Widows Bite gauntlets, the better to pose her electrocuting my Lex Luthor action figure. Or jumpstarting my Portal turret.

Oh who am I kidding, I can’t afford this figure, so, like you, I will be gazing at these scarily accurate pictures of it instead.

Thanks to Redditor LargeMaleDogOrHorse, we have a very important screenshot from Captain America: The Winter Soldier - Steve Rogers’ to-do list. To be fair, since the guy woke up in our time, he’s been pretty busy doing that superhero stuff, nice to see he finally has some time to indulge. But some important questions remain: Did Steve make this list or did Natasha (or Coulson) make it for him? Which order did he watch Star Wars in? Why is disco on this list at all?? But just think, when he’s done, Steve will finally understand some references!

What would you add to the list?

Captain America 3 Will Be Released The Same Weekend As Man Of Steel 2

Some interesting Captain America related news this morning. The biggest? Marvel’s next Captain America installment will go head to head with Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel sequel. Read on for more on that, plus details on the third film, and the lengthy deal Sebastian Stan signed up for.

We previously heard Man of Steel 2 was being pushed back to May 6, 2016. We took this as good news because it meant more time to develop the film which was rapidly turning into a Justice League prequel. However, the new date put the film up against an untitled Marvel Entertainment film. We’ve just learned that film will be Captain America 3.

The Hollywood Reporter writes:

That’s the plan, anyway, creating the biggest superhero box office showdown in history. (Marvel Studios and parent company Disney staked out the date first.) Shooting schedules and postproduction could always impact the current blueprint, however. Also, Marvel and Disney have a second untitled movie scheduled to open that summer on July 8, so there is wiggle room.

Speaking of, Captain America: The Winter Soldier directors Joe Russo and Anthony Russo along with Marvel’s Kevin Feige, have confirmed to Collider the duo will once again lead the third film. They told the film site:

“Well now that Kevin [Feige] said it that means we can talk about it, I guess.  That’s great.  We’re just in the formative stages of it right now.  We just started breaking story with [screenwriters Christopher] Markus and [Stephen] McFeely and we’re just getting an idea of what we wanna do with it.  It’s crazy working on it before the movie even comes out because you want to see what people respond to in the movie.  You want to get some inspiration from what people like about the film so you go, ‘Okay, this is what we gotta lean into in the next movie’ or ‘this is what we should move away from, this didn’t work so well.’  So we’re just in that phase of breaking story but waiting to see how people respond to the movie.”

The last bit of Cap news actually pertains to his co-star Stan. His interview with Newsarama revealed he signed up for a whopping nine picture deal which he called “great job security. They also asked him if he’d become Captain America in the future, much like his comic book counterpart did. “I don’t know! They don’t tell me anything. That’s just the truth,” he said.

A Whedonverse Favorite Has Been Cast as Agent Coulson’s Infamous ‘Cellist

$
0
0

This is really the strength that SHIELD should be aiming for: filling in the holes of the Marvel Universe that we would normally turn to fan fiction for. A throwaway line, like the one in The Avengers where Coulson and Pepper Potts discuss his long distance relationship with an unnamed ‘cellist, in a network as large as the one crafting Marvel’s shared cinema universe, is one destined to only be explored by fans. But Marvel has confirmed that it will be featuring that unnamed musician in an upcoming episode of SHIELD.

A tangent: We might not even have a line where Pepper asks Coulson about his ‘cellist if Robert Downey Jr. hadn’t pushed so hard to ensure that Gwyneth Paltrow was included in The Avengers.

Dollhouse and Angel veteran Amy Acker is our ‘cellist, a woman named Audrey who, as established by previous episodes of SHIELD, believes Agent Coulson to be dead, and will appear on the show in just a few weeks. Apparently, a “super-powered threat from her past” reemerges and she must be “guarded” by Coulson from afar. And maybe I’ve read too many superhero comics, but *yawn*. I at least expected her to be kidnapped by the Clairvoyant or something. Still, I’m sure there will be lots of vulnerable Coulson in there, so that’s something to look forward to.

In other SHIELD news, the production is opening up a SHIELD themed hands-on science exhibit in New York Times Square for all ages, keeping up a theme of supporting STEM education that began with Natalie Portman and Marvel collaborating on a girls in STEM mentoring program. Clark Gregg is doubling down on the idea that the show’s climax will truly shock fans. “When people see the remaining episodes of the season — what they’re doing here is a slow build to something I don’t think you’ve seen before.” I dunno, Mr. Gregg. I’m not quite over you calling folks who quit after a whopping ten episodes “losers” and asking fans to have patience, even if you did walk back from your language a moment later. Lets say that I’m crossing my fingers that you’re right, but I’m not holding my breath.

And finally, Marvel has confirmed that SHIELD will have a tie in episode as soon as Captain America: The Winter Soldier premieres, which will be an interesting test for the production. Winter Soldier promises a plot where most of the main characters are high level SHIELD agents, so the production has their work cut out for them to make the show and movie feel like they’re happening contiguously. Their first tie-in episode that coincided with a movie release (“The Well“), was criticized for not actually deriving its plot from the events of Thor: The Dark World. The most recent episode of the series, “Yes Men“, which actually features an asgardian character from The Dark World as well as a central episode problem that derives directly from plot points in The Dark World, proves that the show is capable of doing close tie ins with movies. Just maybe not immediately after release.

We have some Captain America videos for you on this fine, cold Thursday. I know the new movie’s called The Winter Soldier, but damn, I wouldn’t object to it being warm when it comes out. The first video, above, is a new Winter Soldier clip in which Black Widow does what Black Widow does. Below you’ll find a Captain America Honest Trailer and a featurette for the Winter Soldier along the lines of the Falcon and Black Widow ones we saw before.

Warning for sweet summer children: The Winter Soldier featurette below spoils the thing that isn’t really a spoiler, except maybe it is if you have bad facial recognition of actors, know nothing about the background from the comics, and want to go in to Winter Soldier completely blind. In which case, why are you watching featurettes? Basically, don’t watch if you don’t already know who the Winter Soldier is. Anyone? Bueller?

Captain America: The Winter Soldier Delivers Big Ideas, Bigger Explosions

$

Whether punching out Hitler or hanging up his shield, Captain America has always been a barometer for America’s political atmosphere, a reliable gauge for what’s on the minds of the nation. In his latest adventure, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, he is again, standing as a voice of reason in a high-octane action drama that concerns itself with the all-too-pertinent debate of freedom versus security. Those who found the first Cap adventure distasteful in its hamminess will be pleased to know that CA:TWS contains nothing of the kind, being a grim-faced thrill ride with no time to talk and no room for cheese. The jokes in Winter Soldier are spare and barely land, a testament to the film’s hard edge. But, unlike some of its dark-and-gritty peers in the superhero genre, a touch of darkness serves this sequel well, working for its covert ops setting instead of against it.

Is the price of knowing SPOILERS a price you’re willing to pay?

Cap (Chris Evans) is back, still trying to piece together the 21st century after the events of The Avengers. Thinking he’s found a place as a black ops leader for S.H.I.E.L.D., jumping back into a soldier’s game, Steve is in for a rude awakening in the tricky world of spy versus spy. Caught between a sneaky Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) who may be gathering or selling intel illicitly, and the scheming World Security Council member Alexander Pierce (Robert Redford), Steve must figure out whose side he’s on, if any. Pierce seems too eager to go ahead with the insidious Project Insight, a weapons system of three Helicarriers linked to a satellite network that can pinpoint an individual target essentially anywhere in the world. But Project Insight isn’t the only piece on the board; also in play is a mysterious, deadly Soviet agent known only as the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan). Deeming the price of ‘security’ too high, Steve teams up with superspy Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and VA buddy Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) to get to the bottom of the intel mystery, and stop Pierce from holding the world hostage for its own protection.

A timely topic keeps CA:TWS on point, giving the story a place to focus and build. It’s a potent mixture of superhero flick and political detective story, with some straight-from-a-comic twists, like the revelation that HYDRA is secretly controlling not only S.H.I.E.L.D., but the larger course of history since World War II. Nazi scientist Dr. Arnim Zola’s reappearance as a consciousness trapped in an enormous computer bank is unexpected, but CA:TWS makes sure never to veer too far off course into ever more fantastic territory. Instead, it keeps its sci-fi elements to the bare minimum, mostly concerning the eponymous Winter Soldier.

The action is plentiful, delivering sequences that keep the tension high, and give the impression that our beloved heroes really are in danger. One piece, featuring Nick Fury fleeing from a gang of hired hitmen posing as police officers, is especially nerve-racking. We know our protagonists will probably survive, but how they’ll get out of the jam they’ve found themselves in is a real trick. Other scenes are just good, dirty fun, like the trailer-featured elevator fight between Cap and a collection of goons. Johansson, I am pleased to note, gets her fair share of screentime kicking ass, though I was displeased to see her kept out of the Big Climactic Battle, even if she gets to play a key role on the ground. Mackie’s play, meanwhile, is more about avoiding being hit by enemy fire, though he does get to take down a few flying bad guys before his wings are clipped.

Given the poor track record of representation in modern films, it’s perhaps of great significance that Captain America’s support team consists of two women and two black men. Quietly, and with blessedly little fanfare, CA:TWS continues the tradition of Cap’s stories reflecting his time, in this case in the roster of good guys. Race and gender remain present, but they are subsumed by across-the-board badassery. Mr. America may still be as blonde and white as they come, another hurdle yet to be jumped, and one higher than any of us in our hopeful forum conversations can know. It doesn’t mean we aren’t getting closer, though, or that CA:TWS isn’t a marker of possible (good) things to come.

CA:TWS is utterly competent, tickling off boss fights and big battles sequences on a neat checklist that never bores, but never surprises, either. With fast action and a whizzing camera, two hours and fifteen minutes flies by, and, as far as the MCU goes, there are worse ways to spend that time. Don’t get me wrong, I liked, and was highly entertained, by CA:TWS. I just felt like there was a piece missing, some undefined element that was absent from the surfeit of explosions, machine gun fire, and mean right hooks.

The missing puzzle piece, at least for me, was a thoroughly filled-in background for the relationship between Cap and old war pal Bucky Barnes who, thanks to Soviet brainwashing and cryogenic technology, has been turned into enemy number one, the Winter Soldier. Like many of you, I had both seen the first Captain America movie, and am aware of the iconic Ed Brubaker arc involving the Winter Soldier. But that background was what I brought with me into the theater, more so, I felt, than what was presented to me onscreen. Yes, there is a flashback to the good old days of pre-serum Steve and his best bud as they once were. Yes, we’re told by both characters and a helpful Smithsonian exhibit who he is and what he means to our hero. For me, at least, I needed a bit more. The tragedy of Buck Barnes is material rich for mining, yet I felt that in the crowded field of battle that is CA:TWS, there was precious little time for that tragedy to play out. Perhaps it’s a lot to expect from a fast-paced film that has so much to cram in. However, given how essential it is to know that character in order for the final confrontation to hit us hard, we need a little more time with him.

The question of whether freedom should be compromised for the sake of individual or national security is a contentious debate in our present, and, though that debate is at CA:TWS’ core, there’s no ambiguity here about what side our hero is on. Steve Rogers as a character is the moral center in a world of deceit, and it’s good fun to see him get knocked off balance, if only in brief. Behind the shield, after all, he’s just a man trying to find his way in a complex, sometimes brave, new world. I may chide CA:TWS for being somewhat stone-faced, yet, all said and done, its sincerity is the thing that, amidst a symphony of destruction and bullets, lets this film ring true.

So… What the Heck is Gonna be Winter Soldier‘s Effect on Tonight’s SHIELD?

$
0
0

This post will contain spoilers for Captain America: The Winter Soldier. So will tomorrow’s Agents of SHIELD recap. So will every Agents of SHIELD recap from now on, probably, so I’ll just get into the post before somebody starts yelling at me.

Okay. So, everybody here has seen Winter Soldier, right? If not, get out of here. I’m looking at you, Steve Carlsberg.

Alright, lets get down to business. What are we going to be walking into tonight, and what might it mean about Agents of SHIELD as a television show, now that Captain America: Winter Soldier snapped the show’s concept in half like so many crashing helicarriers. The characters of the show have no idea what they’re being flown into, but we do: their entire organization has been revealed to have been infiltrated by Hydra agents from its inception, culminating in the defection of large portions of its operating force, as well as the death (so far as they are aware) of Coulson’s mentor and administrative patron Nick Fury. Folks behind the scenes have been predictably vague, though we do know that Samuel L. Jackson will be appearing again in the season finale.

So, first, lets talk about what probably hasn’t changed: Coulson’s quest for truth about his resurrection. This is likely to still be a valid realm of inquiry, since it was Nick Fury who put him through hell to resurrect him. We know this because the files were locked and hidden under his orders. We know it’s possible for SHydraIELD agents to lock things higher than the director’s clearance and make it look like those files were locked on his orders, but I think it’s unlikely that Coulson was kept alive on Hydra orders for two reasons. 1) Maria Hill knows the truth about T.A.H.I.T.I., and 2) Victoria Hand/The Clairvoyant doesn’t.

Hand’s gotta be working for Hydra; the idea that she might represent some kind of third faction here is far too complicated for Agents of SHIELD to be playing around with. Besides, despite how the mythical Hydra has many heads, Marvel’s Hydra motto has always been “Cut off a limb, and two more shall take its place!” And what has more limbs than a Centipede?

Now, what we don’t know: what a crippled SHIELD organization does to pick up the pieces after its Hydra infestation is expunged. What Agent Coulson and his secret strike force do now that all of their superiors are dead, evil and/or fired. Who becomes their superiors now? Are Captain America and Black Widow, as fellow SHIELD agents, aware the Coulson is alive? What do these revelations about the origins of SHIELD mean for the putative Peggy Carter series?

And why can’t I shake this nagging suspicion that somebody really wanted a Marvel Universe-set television show that would tie in with all the Phase 2 sequels and thus premiere in the fall of 2012, and that somebody else wanted a Captain America 2 that threw down everything we knew about SHIELD and that those two conflicting desires have given us a television show that was prohibited from actually doing anything interesting until the seventeenth episode of its first season. At the very least, I’d be willing to bet that the reason why the show’s schedule has been so terribly unpredictable (One episode in December, two in January, one in February, and two in March) was so its season, which will eventually last as long as a conventional school year, would stretch long enough to make it to Winter Soldier with a chunk of episodes left for the fallout. Last week marked the beginning of a seven week stretch of consistently aired episodes, the longest consistently aired stretch of new episodes since the first five.

Some of these questions and suspicions may be answered tonight. Maybe we’ll see Victoria Hand defeated (or at least out of the picture) by the end of tonight’s episode. Maybe fighting Hydra agents will consume the full rest of the season. But for now, there’s still a whole five or so hours to wait. I invite you to spend those five ours as is traditional: arguing amongst yourselves in the comments below.
